The STC-1S is capable of capturing sound in an extremely detailed way, due to the positioning of the two microphones. To understand how a matched-pair of microphones work, imagine that the two microphones capture sound in the same way that your ears capture sound. When we hear sound it is possible to identify the direction the sound is coming from, and it is possible to pick up such a rich soundfield using two microphones that are placed in a similar way to our ears. With this in mind, you can imagine the greater amount of detail such a pair of microphones can capture. A 'matched pair' is necessary for such a process because if you're aiming to catch a stereophonic sound it is important to have both microphones as identical as possible.
