This high-quality condenser microphone with tube amplification is similar in design to Peluso 's P12: Both feature the 34 millimeter edge-limited microphone capsule with a diaphragm made of gold-coated Mylar and the 6072A triode tube. It therefore offers the same clear and open character with a clear focus on nuanced mids and slightly more subtle bass. However, the 22 251 impresses with the modified control behavior of the tube grid and cathode, which gives it 7 dB more gain than the P12. It also exhibits a different frequency response due to the larger basket. Its sensitivity is higher, the noise level lower and the weight somewhat lower than that of the P12, although the 22 251 does without the switchable low-cut filter and pre-attenuator. Users of this microphone particularly appreciate its warmth and subtle grain in the sound as well as the well-balanced, natural, bright frequency image, whether for vocal, speech or instrument recordings. The directional characteristic can be changed in nine stages from omnidirectional (omnidirectional ) to cardioid to bidirectional (figure of eight) using a rotary switch on the power supply unit.
